Mary McClure

Mary McClure

This scholarship is lovingly created in Fred H. McClure’s memory by his sister, Mary McClure. Fred started his teaching career in Cleveland, Ohio with courses in speech and debate but in his later career, he switched to English as a Second Language since he felt there was a great need for this field. He came to Foothill in the early 60s and taught for 30 years. Mary said that Fred was considered an excellent teacher wherever he conducted classes and caring friend to those who crossed his path in life. He was generous with his time, passions and hospitality. He loved politics and social issues and was an avid reader who never stopped learning and a great traveler. He had a great commitment to education and firm belief being able to communicate in everyday situations. He deeply enjoyed teaching ESL classes and Mary wished to celebrate his spirit and his legacy with this scholarship which is intended for ESL students.
