De Anza Caroline P. Zlotnick Nurse Education Scholarship
Description and Statement of Purpose:
Greg Zlotnick, Caroline’s son, established this scholarship to support community college students and honor his mother, a 1962 graduate of the Stanford University School of Nursing. Caroline and her husband David, a pediatrician, volunteered with INTERPLAST for 18 years during the 1970’s and 80’s, traveling to Mexico, Central and South America, as medical support staff caring for patients receiving free surgeries mainly to repair cleft lips, cleft palates, and burn scars. Caroline returned to working full-time in her early 40’s, and she earned a Master’s of Science in Nursing degree from UC San Francisco in 1984. She worked for close to two decades as a perinatal nurse specialist at Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, focusing on caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Before she could do that, though, she had to regain her nursing certification, and Caroline did so through the De Anza Nursing Program. This scholarship is intended for those students with a passionate commitment to nursing as a career, with a preference for those who include perinatal nursing as a focus of their studies.
