Dr. Thomas A. and Dr. Elizabeth A. Vician Endowed Scholarship for Transfer Students

Generously established by Drs. Thomas and Elizabeth Vician.

Dr. Thomas A. Vician was a professor of philosophy at De Anza College for nearly fifty years, and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth A. Vician, was a professor of psychology for thirty years in guidance and counseling at Chabot College.

This scholarship is to support De Anza students who have excelled academically, demonstrated leadership skills, have demonstrated financial need, and are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university to study humanities, social sciences, or science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Applicant must be planning to transfer from De Anza to a four-year college or university next Fall. Funds will not be disbursed until student submits proof of enrollment in a four-year accredited college or university.
2. Applicant must be enrolled in at least 6 units at De Anza at the time of the scholarship deadline.
3. Applicant’s cumulative De Anza College GPA must be a 3.25 or higher.
4. Applicant must demonstrate their involvement and leadership in student organizations and campus or community activities. The applicant must elaborate on their leadership skills in the My Story essay that is part of the general scholarship application.
5. Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must file a current school year’s financial aid application (the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens, or the California Dream Act Application at https://dream.csac.ca.gov for undocumented students who qualify for AB 540 status) at least one week prior to the scholarship application deadline by 4:00 pm. NOTE: Undocumented students who do not qualify for AB 540 status should contact the Financial Aid office for guidance about completing a financial aid application.

Special Instructions:
In your My Story essay, be sure to:
-Identify specific obstacles you have faced that impact your ability to continue your education at a four­ year college or university, such as finances or being the first in your family to attend college.
-Elaborate on your leadership skills.
-Demonstrate your strong motivation and commitment to study humanities, social sciences or STEM at a four-year college or university.
