City of Santa Clara Silicon Valley Power College Scholarship

The City Council of the City of Santa Clara in conjunction with the City electric utility, Silicon Valley Power, is continuing their scholarship program to provide tuition grants to students with a goal of entering a field related to energy services, public power, and/or power industry. Up to three scholarships of $5,000.00 each will be awarded per year.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a resident of the City of Santa Clara, or attending school in the City of Santa Clara and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Possess a high school diploma or be a high school senior
  • Be enrolled in a community college, college, or technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education by the time the scholarship is awarded or no later than October 1, 2019
  • Submit an application with cover letter
  • Meet the application requirements (school transcripts, three letters of recommendations, answers to four essay questions, and an interview)
  • Demonstrate the goal of entering a field related to energy services, public power, or the power industry, including a four year degree in a discipline related to public power and/or energy industry (i.e. engineering, technology, science, mathematics, economics, finance, environmental science, political science, or business administration)

Application Questions:
(Essays should be thorough and specific, but no longer than a total of two pages, typewritten, single-spaced.)

  1. Describe your anticipated course of study and how your course of study will be utilized in energy services, public power, or the power industry.
  2. Tell the evaluating team a little about yourself. What are your outside interests, hobbies, volunteer activities?
  3. Tell the evaluating team a little about your educational background. What classes have you taken? What are your favorite classes? What are your least favorite classes? Why?
  4. Tell the evaluating team what this scholarship might mean for you. Why would you like to be awarded the scholarship?

Evaluation Process:

Applications will be reviewed by an Evaluation Committee composed of representatives from the local educational and business community. GPA may be used in the evaluation. Evaluation Committee representatives are not related to City of Santa Clara officials or employees.

Students must submit their completed application packets which include:

  1. the completed application
  2. the answers to the essay questions
  3. a sealed set of your transcripts
  4. three letters of recommendation (two academic and one personal, from a non-family member)
  5. cover letter to the address provided on the application form.

Completed application packets must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 17, 2018. Postmarks and faxes will not be accepted.
