Foothill Marisol Lopez Scholarship Endowment for Dental Assisting

Dr. Jan Gabus has practiced dentistry for more than 36 years in Menlo Park. He retired in March 2018 and established a scholarship in honor of his dental assistant, Marisol Lopez, who has so capably been his right hand woman for the past 28 years. Dr. Gabus recognizes the struggle of immigrants and those who are first generation in obtaining their college education. This scholarship is intended for those immigrant/first generation students who are pursuing their dental assisting degrees.
Criteria:
1) Must be enrolled in Foothill’s Dental Assisting program
2) Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0
3) Must demonstrate financial need: Applicant must file a current academic year’s financial aid application (the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens, or the California Dream Act Application at https://dream.csac.ca.gov for undocumented students who qualify for AB540 status) at least one week prior to the scholarship application deadline by 4:00pm. NOTE: Undocumented students who do not qualify for AB540 status should contact the Financial Aid Office for guidance about completing a financial aid application.
4) Must answer this short essay question: Describe the struggles of either yourself, a family member, or friend, of being an immigrant/first generation in the United States and how this has affected your path to a college education.
