Through the Science Learning institute (SLI), 3 Foothill College students will have an opportunity to participate in a two quarter internship to work with a Foothill College astronomy instructor and UC Santa Cruz professor and research team in their summer Science internship Program (SIP).

Spring quarter:
Work with Astronomy instructor Geoff Mathews on preparing for the summer internship as well as supporting his research. If you do not already know Python programming, you will learn that skill in the spring. This portion can be in-person or remote with Dr. Mathews.

Summer: June 21 – August 13, 2022
Before the internship officially starts, there are two weeks of optional training and special activities. Then you will be an intern in the Science Internship Program (SIP) at UC Santa Cruz, on a research team with a professor and other students for eight weeks, committing 20 hours per week. The internship program is scheduled to be hybrid for summer 2022 though this is subject to change. You can find out more about SIP at https://sip.ucsc.edu/. This portion can be in-person/ hybrid at UCSC or remote.

Internship commitments:

  • Commitment of 3 – 4 hours per week in the spring quarter and 20 hours per week for 8 weeks in the summer.
  • Enrollment in an ITRN course both in the spring (ITRN 50) and summer (ITRN 53 or 54). Course tuition will be covered by the Science Learning Institute or your financial aid.
  • Program orientations for the summer internship program – one in mid June for SIP and one in late June for SLI.
  • Submission of a final report of your internship experience along with a final presentation as part of a larger internship cohort at the end of the summer.
  • Participation in an internship seminar during the summer – more details to be shared upon acceptance.

Scholarship amount: $3200 total
Scholarship payments will occur in three installments and will depend on successful completion at each stage:

  1. End of spring quarter – $500
  2. Middle of summer – $1350
  3. End of summer – $1350

Application criteria:

  • Majoring in a STEM discipline.
  • Have completed at least 12 units of STEM coursework at Foothill College by the time spring quarter starts (any science, technology, engineering or math course).
  • Have Foothill College as your primary school (more credits at Foothill College than at De Anza College).
  • Full completion of the application, including naming a faculty/staff reference.
  • Desired coursework and skills (equivalent experience and knowledge will be considered):
  • Python programming knowledge and/or other computer programming language.
  • Calculus or Statistics
  • Physics and/or Astronomy coursework
    - Physics (mechanics)
    - Physics (E&M)
    - Astronomy 10A or 10B

Priority given to:

  • Students with have demonstrated financial need (through completion of the FAFSA or CA Dream Act)
  • Students who have not previously had an internship or company experience.
  • Students who have the intent to transfer.
  • First time degree earners (no prior degree such as a Bachelor’s or Associate).
