Foothill SLI STEM Internship Scholarship: Winter 2023 STEM Research Micro-Internship
Description: STEM Research Micro-Internship
Through the Science Learning institute (SLI), Foothill College students will have an opportunity to engage in a research project under the guidance of a mentor who is a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher for the winter quarter. Research mentors from Stanford University, Foothill College, and SETI have proposed projects based on their own research. Internship commitments:
- Commitment of 6 – 7 hours each week for 11 weeks in winter quarter.
- Enrollment in ITRN 50 or 51 (depends on projected number of hours of internship). Course tuition will be covered by the Science Learning Institute or your financial aid.
- A program orientation for the internship program before winter break with the Science Learning Institute.
- Submission of a final report of your internship experience at the end of the quarter.
- Final presentation during week 11 of winter quarter for an audience of all interns and mentors in the program.
- Attendance at a biweekly (every other week) cohort seminar on professional development topics
- Students will be asked to submit an application to Foothill College’s Research and Service Leadership Symposium which is scheduled to be held in May 2023. The application deadline is usually in March.
Scholarship amount: $1300 total
Scholarship payments will occur in two installments and will depend on successful completion at each stage: one in the middle of the internship and one at the end after completion of the final report and final presentation.
Application criteria:
- Interest in STEM research. You don’t have to be a STEM major!
- Review the “required skills” in the Project and Mentor Catalog (https://foothill.edu/sli/internships/pdf/sy2023/Winter2023MicroInternshipProjectandMentorCatalog.pdf) and make sure you meet the minimum requirements. For some projects, this may include advance coursework and for others there are minimal requirements.
- Have completed at least 6 units at Foothill College in the fall 2022 quarter.
- Be enrolled at Foothill College in winter 2023 for at least 6 units and no more than 15 units.
- Have Foothill College as your primary school (more credits at Foothill College than at De Anza College).
- Full completion of the application, including naming a faculty/staff reference and upload of a resume.
Priority given to:
- Students with demonstrated financial need (through completion of the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application and/or explanation in application supplementary question).
- Students who have not previously had an internship or company experience.
- Students who have the intent to transfer.
- First time degree earners (no prior degree such as a Bachelor’s or Associate).
