Foothill SLI STEM Internship Scholarship 2023

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Students can only apply for this scholarship after having received approval from SLI Director Sophia Kim to do so. If you have an internship for which you would like to receive funding from the Science Learning Institute , please reach out to Sophia at kimsophia@fhda.edu before filling out this application. If you do fill out this application without contacting Sophia first, you will not be considered for funding.

Description: SLI STEM Internship Scholarship
Through the Science Learning Institute (SLI), students can apply for funding to support an unpaid STEM internship they have obtained independently. The amount of the scholarship will be dependent on financial need, the terms of the internship (start and end dates, hours per week, type of work), and the discretion of the SLI Director.

Internship commitments: If a scholarship is secured through SLI, the following commitments must be made:

• Enrollment in Foothill College ITRN 50 series course (depends on projected number of hours of internship). Course tuition will be covered by the Science Learning Institute or your financial aid. Exceptions may be made for this commitment upon arrangement with Sophia Kim.
• A program orientation with the SLI director.
• Submission of a final report of your internship experience at the end of your internship (guidelines to be provided).

Scholarship amount:

• Scholarship payments will occur in two installments and will depend on successful completion at each stage: once at the middle of the term of the internship and once at the end.

Application criteria:

1. You must already have secured an internship. You will be asked to upload proof of your internship offer.
2. Internship must be related to a STEM discipline.
3. Internship must be fully unpaid.
4. You must have Foothill College as your primary school (more credits completed at Foothill College than at De Anza College).
5. You should have been enrolled in classes at Foothill College in a timeframe close to your internship – this will be evaluated at the discretion of the SLI Director. For example, if you have not taken any Foothill courses for the last four months or longer, you may not be eligible for this funding.
6. Full completion of the application, including naming a faculty/staff reference.
7. You must have completed the FAFSA or CA Dream Act application to show your financial need. If you are an international student and cannot fill out those forms, you should explain your financial need in the supplementary questions.

Priority given to:

• Students with demonstrated financial need, who have not previously had an internship or research experience, and who have the intent to transfer.
• First time degree earners (no prior degree such as a Bachelor’s or Associate degree).

Application requirements:

• Fill out academicworks general scholarship application.
• Fill out supplemental application questions, including uploading your resume.
• Upload unofficial transcript to scholarship portal.
