Foothill Donald M. and Shirley M. Hewitt Scholarship
Description & Purpose:
Created in loving memory by Donald’s daughter Candace Hewitt Leonard and her husband Mark G. Leonard. During the Great Depression Donald Milton Hewitt (1921-2010) tried to better himself by attending a local junior college, but he was $75 short of being able to pay the tuition to continue. During WWII he volunteered to join the US Navy, but it was not allowed because he was already in the Merchant Marine. Service in the Merchant Marine didn’t qualify for the GI Bill after the war, so that approach to college was also blocked. Even without a college degree he led a happy, successful life, but always wished he’d been able to be a college graduate. This scholarship is intended to help future students who are smart enough and diligent enough to succeed at college, but who need financial aid.
