De Anza Gilbert Wong APASA Scholarship in Activism, Community Organizing, and Social Justice
Established by Foothill-De Anza Community College Trustee Gilbert Wong who is a strong education advocate with extensive community experience including leadership positions in the Rotary Club of Cupertino, Cupertino Chamber of Commerce, Cupertino Library Foundation, Asian American Parent Association, Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute, the Organization of Chinese Americans Silicon Valley chapter and Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) as Board of Director and Pacific Regional Director. Trustee Wong is a champion for community college students and wished to create a family legacy to recognize and inspire students who share a passion for education, community engagement and social justice.
This scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate leadership and a strong commitment to activism, community organizing, social change promoting understanding across cultural differences, and advocating for social justice in the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) communities.
Successful applicants will must have the following criteria:
• Minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA
• Successfully completed a minimum of 12 quarter units, and be currently enrolled at the time of submission.
• Must provide evidence of community service and leadership, through volunteer activities either on-campus or in the broader APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) community in the past two years.
• In addition to the “My Story” essay, applicants should write an additional one-page essay demonstrating the following:
o Your leadership in or experience fostering cross-cultural awareness or promoting social justice in service to APIDA communities AND
o Include how your activism, community organizing, or social justice activities have affected your educational and/or career goals.
